What is the minimum age for organ donation and blood donation?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under donation | 5 Comments »

Ive always talked about registering for organ donation and I’d also like to donate blood. How old do I have to be? Im 17, turning 18 in May.

in the uk you can donate blood from age 17 as long as you are over 8 stone in weight

organ donation has no age limit, though in the uk you can carry an organ donor card from 17 stating that you wish to have your organs donated when you die.

What are some good charities to donate to for stopping human trafficking?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under donate | 2 Comments »

I want to donate to a charity that helps stop human trafficking, but I don’t want to get ripped off by a fake charity. Also, if you know of where you can buy bracelets or other stuff where the money is donated to the charity that would be great. Thanks.

Consider donating to Friends of Thai Daughters. It’s a very real charity working to end the trafficking of girls in the Golden Triangle.

Do charities get plenty of new clothes donations that used clothes would be worthless?

I have some used clothes I’m getting rid of, and I’m thinking charities get so many new clothes donated that they would have no use for used clothes, would this be right? I’m trying to decide if I should throw them out or bother to donate them somewhere.

In the past I drove a big rig. I hauled things for the Salvation Army. One load I had was going to Mexico. It was full of used clothes going to be used to make mops in Mexico. The Salvation Army sold the clothes for just a few pennies per pound. Best thing is to find someone that wears the same size and give the clothes to them.

Is it better to charge money for tickets or ask for donations?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under money donations | 2 Comments »

I helping organize a concert for charity for children in Africa with schooling and would like to know if it is more effective to charge money for tickets (how much?) and have donations if you want to, or to not charge for tickets and put "donations highly appreciated". Any links, or studies would be helpful.

BTW: The fundraiser is in Iowa, not africa

Well it depends on who’s playing at the concert but if it’s just small local groups, somewhere between $5-10. You can also consider doing a discount on advance tickets, like you advertise $7 in advance or $10 at the door. That way people can donate even if they don’t want to go and/or you can get cash from people who might find out at the last minute that they can’t go.

Also think about ways you can get people to donate more once they’re at the event. Sell drinks or other concessions, or have some VIP tickets that are closer or have some other perk. We used to sell these things called "cheer-o-grams" where guests could pay a certain amount to have a message read out in between acts.

Does Goodwill, Salvation Army, any donation place take bras and underwear?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under goodwill donations | 7 Comments »

Clean and in reasonable condition of course.

I hate to just throw them away and I think if I were broke I would love a used Victoria’s secret bra. Not so sure about the underwear though…maybe if I were really poor.

They won’t take used underwear. They can’t sell any used underwear for obvious reasons. 2D

What is the legality surrounding receiving cash or check donations?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under donations | 1 Comment »

I am not a charity, just receiving donations for a site I want to create. I don’t think there is any problems with people who willingly send in cash donations. I don’t think I have to claim anything like that on my taxes either?

Unless you are a tax exempt charity (legally-defined) or the donations are really gifts, you must pay taxes on them.

How do I value donations to charity?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under charity donations | 2 Comments »

I have a box of books to send to charity. How do I know what the tax value is?

The value is whatever the fair market value of the box of books is, whatever you would buy these books for at the local used books shop in the condition that they’re in. I would keep track of the type of books you sold if they’re just old books (like 15 paperbacks and 10 hardcover). Be more specific if they’re rare (e.g., 1st edition Chaucer).

Otherwise, the other answer’s valuation sounds reasonable.

Where can I send food and clothing donations for Haiti?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under clothing donations | 6 Comments »

My school’s BSU is trying to start a clothing and food drive for those affected by the eartquake in Haiti, and the American Red Cross is only taking monetary donations. Where could I send the donations we collect? Or where could I find an organization that IS collecting food and clothing for the victims of the earthquake? I live in San Bernardino, CA, so I’m hoping for something super local (furthest we can go is Los Angeles). Best answer gets 10 points!!! Thanks in advance!

I coordinate donations and volunteers for a disaster relief organization here in the USA.

PLEASE… resist the urge and use your student brains to help avoid a "secondary disaster" in Haiti!

Your student group doesn’t have to go anywhere to help! Gather fellow students and read this article for more details about why organizations don’t want/need donations of food or clothing from the US. I bet some econ, international relations, sociology majors can lead a discussion. Then, hold a benefit–pass around an empty Starbucks cup and ask people to kick in the money they’d spend on one of their favorite drinks. Send it to the Red Cross or one of the international relief agencies from the link at the end of the article. College students aren’t rich, but your sacrifice of a latte or chai can really add up– and American dollars go pretty far in the developing world. Good luck!
