How do Haiti relief fund text donations raise money?

Posted by admin on January 27th, 2010 and filed under money donations | 3 Comments »

A lot of charities for Haiti right now are asking you to text them, and when you do you will raise/donate 5 dollars for the cause. How do they get the money? Do they take it from your phone bill, or is it for every text a sponsor will donate five dollars?

The donation will be added to your phone bill. Right now, carriers are sending the money right away to the relief agencies, and will collect the money when you pay your bill.

Are clothing donations being accepted to Haiti?

Posted by admin on January 27th, 2010 and filed under clothes donations | 3 Comments »

It is breaking my heart watching the situation in Haiti, and I am desperate to help. Unfortunately, my family is going through an incredibly difficult financial time and donating any amount of money is near impossible. I do, however, have piles upon piles of clothes that we no longer wear (have outgrown, mostly) and I was wondering if there is any credible organization currently accepting donations of clothes. I know money is preferable, but this is all we can really do right now. Thanks so much and bless you all.

I would ask your church or The Salvation Army.Perhaps these two groups can tell you where to give.

I doubt anyone will give you stuff -you’re not a charity – doesn’t matter if you are a non-profit

I’d say volunteer but it could be activities too.

Caritas Internationalis is already providing first aid like water, food and shelter in the destruction zone. The charity also sent in a team of experts to evaluate how to best manage incoming aid.

One of its volunteers on the ground reports that hospitals are full of dead and wounded victims, and reported theres a high risk for the spread of disease.

Caritas is asking for donations on its website caritas.org. People can donate using credit cards or cell phones.

Catholic Relief Services, the American arm of Caritas, has also made its way to the island. CRS has put aside nearly 5 million dollars towards emergency services.

CRS has had presence on the island for more than 55 and has about 340 permanent employees in the area. Of these 120 were living in Port au Prince, the city with the most damage after the quake.

Despite extensive damage to transportation routes, supplies like hygiene kits, mosquito nets and tablets to treat drinking water are making their way to the island from as far away as Santo Domingo and Miami.

CRS.org is also taking donations people can send their monetary contributions through a transfer, check, credit card or through cell phones.

Text messaging aids Haiti donations

Posted by admin on January 26th, 2010 and filed under money donations | No Comments »

Governments worldwide have pledged almost $1bn in aid to earthquake-stricken Haiti, with the biggest single contribution of $130m coming from the United States.

Part of that has come from individuals giving money via text messages on their mobile phones.

Over $27m has been raised so far from people in America donating by text messages to charities – including to the Yele Haiti Foundation, headed by Wyclef Jean, the Haitian-born musician.

Al Jazeera’s Cath Turner reports from New York City on the drive for donations and the questions about where that money is going. (Jan 22, 2010)
