How do charities fund themselves other than with voluntary donations?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under charities donations | 1 Comment »

Hi, I was wondering how charities fund themselves other than with voluntary donations, for example when donations are low or as a more reliable source of income? Thanks very much :)

* Trading income (38%).
* Grants/fees from central or local government (37%).
* Donations, legacies and similar income (20%).

Breakdown from the Charities Commission website.

This last couple of years have been particularly bad for charities because many have seen their income from investment drop substantially, and people have been donating less as they have had to manage their own cashflow problems. The grants and fees from central and local government have also been under pressure. Local Councils have cut back on funding to charities, and central government has been simultaneously talking up the importance of charities while making ever more stringent rules on demonstrable value for money.

Looking for Silent Auction donations for a charity event in Sept in downtown Mpls. HELP!!?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under charity donations | 1 Comment »

I’m a part of a committee putting together an event in downtown Mpls. in Sept to raise money for People Serving People, a homeless shelter downtown. I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas or any connections to help me solicit silent auction items for the event. We’re looking for some big ticket items that will bring in a good amount of money for the charity. Please let me know if you have any ideas, contacts, or would be able to help me out in any way.

Thanks!

Talk to the staff liason to your committe about getting some of their letter head or getting someone there to put your requests on letterhead. Go to local businesses (less red tape than chain stores) and request the items. You don’t necessarily have to know someone already to get them to give, especially when it’s such a worthy cause. You might also ask the charity about people and businesses that have been generous in the past, and ask if they’re willing to donate. Local Hospitals and medis, such as radio or TV stations are good places to ask, as are banks and sports teams. Also try civic groups, like business clubs, or political groups.

Sponsor a Child 1 – Open Arms International Non-Profit Charity

http://www.openarmsinternational.com/id.sponsor-a-child

Become an Open Arms Partner Parent by sponsoring a child through Open Arms International (OAI), a non-profit charity organization.

1. Sponsor an individual child for $55 per month. 2. Sponsor a portion of the street children feeding program for $30 per month. 3. Sponsor a child in a family to get an education for $30 per month.
Sponsoring a child is a very serious commitment. If you choose to sponsor an individual child for $55 per month, you are committing to be a sponsor for the life of that child (until age 18 or 19). If you cannot make a serious commitment, consider sponsoring a street child through our feeding program or sponsoring a child in a family to get an education.

Open Arms International is an international humanitarian relief and development organization dedicated to raising children in Africa and India orphaned by AIDS, civil warfare, disease or other tragedy to reach their full potential. OAI also works with families and their communities ravaged by poverty, disease and injustice so that they might have hope for a brighter future. OAI serves all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, tribe or gender. OAI was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in Portland, Oregon with affiliate offices in Manchester, England and Eldoret, Kenya. The organization currently serves in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Mozambique and India.

Our mission is to provide relief from physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering through medical expertise and Christian ministry.

Donations NOT to send

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under clothes donations | 2 Comments »

Even though people mean well, a lot of people make mistakes during donations. People are unaware that sending non monetary donations can actually create more chaos for the disaster site. With the recent Haiti
earthquake scences, this video is probably too late in reaching the millions of clothes, medicine, water, food, and blanket donars. May this video help point out the common mistakes you made.
