Around 1916, that watchful young man released a line of interlocking toy logs which featured wooden windows, doors and roof frames, and labeled them Lincoln Logs. The financial success of this building set was instigated by current societal developments combined with the young man’s innovation. That same generation witnessed the initial sales of tinker toys and erector sets, along with the construction and following destruction of the Titanic. The success of Lincoln Logs and other construction toys was a symptom of America’s increasing infatuation with the delights we were convinced we could build. The popularity of Lincoln Logs crested by the latter 20s and effectively survived during the 1930s and ’40s. The following baby boom caused another sales rise for these sturdy educational toys, and the Daniel Boone craze during the early 50s simply made miniature log cabins actually more preferred. Lincoln Logs were some of the first toys to be marketed on a television show, the Pioneer Playhouse in 1953.
