Looking for Silent Auction donations for a charity event in Sept in downtown Mpls. HELP!!?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under charity donations | 1 Comment »

I’m a part of a committee putting together an event in downtown Mpls. in Sept to raise money for People Serving People, a homeless shelter downtown. I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas or any connections to help me solicit silent auction items for the event. We’re looking for some big ticket items that will bring in a good amount of money for the charity. Please let me know if you have any ideas, contacts, or would be able to help me out in any way.

Thanks!

Talk to the staff liason to your committe about getting some of their letter head or getting someone there to put your requests on letterhead. Go to local businesses (less red tape than chain stores) and request the items. You don’t necessarily have to know someone already to get them to give, especially when it’s such a worthy cause. You might also ask the charity about people and businesses that have been generous in the past, and ask if they’re willing to donate. Local Hospitals and medis, such as radio or TV stations are good places to ask, as are banks and sports teams. Also try civic groups, like business clubs, or political groups.

Donate an old car to a socially responsible charity by researching the organization and signing over the title of the car to the charity. Tax deductions on cash donations to charity?

Posted by admin on April 26th, 2010 and filed under charity donations | 2 Comments »

I’m confused is it 50% of your cash donation to charity that is deductible or is it only up to 50% of your income that is deductible?

Someone please clarify.

Contributions to non-profits are only deductible if they are 501(c)3 charitable organizations.

A donation to a charity gives you a deduction, but the tax savings is at most the amount of the contribution times your tax bracket. If you are in a 15% bracket and donate $1000 to an eligible organization, your tax savings is at most $150, so at least $850 of the donation comes out of your pocket. If you don’t itemize, there is no tax

Which is a worthier charity of your donations: the Wikimedia Foundation or Pets with Disabilities?

Posted by admin on April 20th, 2010 and filed under charity donations | 7 Comments »

The Today show did a story this morning about Pets with Disabilities. They take in handicapped dogs that would otherwise be put down and try to find homes for them. Predictably, only a very small percentage of those dogs get placed.

Sounds like Pets with Disabilities would make you feel better about your donation than donating to a website whose most popular pages center on sex- and porn-related images.

My concern with both organizations would be how much of their revenues are they spending on program services. We all know Wikimedia’s abysmal 31.5% ratio. But, Pets with Disabilities also seems to be spending too little of 2008’s revenues… preferring to set aside that money for future initiatives:

If I were you, I would go for funding a more efficient animal-friendly non-profit, such as your local SPCA. For example, according to GuideStar, my local Pennsylvania SPCA has a program efficiency of nearly 78%:

In my opinion, that’s better accounting of money than either Wikimedia or the Pets with Disabilities program.
