What charities in the New Haven, CT area pick up furniture?

Posted by admin on March 21st, 2010 and filed under furniture donations | 2 Comments »

I am looking for a charity to pick up furniture and other household items on quite short notice (in about a week) for donation. A receipt for tax purposes would be a good bonus. Pick up must be to an apartment in downtown New Haven. Thank you for any advice!

I don’t think any local charities will pick up on short notice, but you can try calling:

Salvation Army
303 George St. (you can’t bring donations to the retail store on Crown St.)
New Haven, CT 06511
(203) 865-0511
http://www.salvationarmyarc.org
Call 1-800-95-TRUCK (1-800-958-7825) to arrange for a pickup of clothing or furniture.

Goodwill
95 Hamilton St.
New Haven, Connecticut
(203) 777-2000
http://www.newhavengoodwill.easterseals.com

(You can always post a free listing at http://newhaven.craigslist.org and/or http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecyclenewhaven asking people to come take your stuff away. You can ask for money at Craigslist, but not Freecycle.)

I live out od state and have few big peices of furniture and need to find new homes for them. I can have them on my porch for pick up. Can anyone help.
Any suggestions?

Volunteers of America and Salvation Army do this in some areas of the country.

You can also list them on
Craigslist or
http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org
join a Freecycle group and list them there.
http://www.freecycle.org/
In addition, call a local church, and ask if they know of other possibilities.

Can you claim donations without receipts?

Posted by admin on March 17th, 2010 and filed under furniture donations | 2 Comments »

I have given LOADS of furniture, home goods, and clothes to Goodwill, individuals and other non-profit agencies this year and never collected/asked for any receipts. I just wanted it out of my house. But, now I am realizing, that was THOUSANDS of dollars worth of stuff. Can I claim any of this on my taxes without receipts??
Oops, can I claim donations on my taxes. I should have been a bit more specific in my question. Sorry!

If the amount is within the standard deduction then you needn’t worry about it. Otherwise you have to have receipts. IRS changed their policy from tax year 2007 onwards. You have to have receipts for donations or charitable giving. You should contact the agencies and ask them if they can give you a receipt. I don’t think you will get it from Goodwill or individuals but non-profit agencies might remember.

Is there specific rules for collecting donations (cash & misc Items) for abused wom. & teens?

Posted by admin on March 11th, 2010 and filed under furniture donations | 1 Comment »

I have been collecting donations to help not just abused women but women who are just having a hard time starting over and if they have teen age children. I have gotten large amounts of cash plus many stores have donated new clothing, school supplies, furniture, and a lot of stuff people use daily. I am just not sure if I have a legal responsibility for $ amount of donations, or do I just take these things into different shelters and let them handle any filings for these companies to rec a tax deduction. Can someone help me find out? Maybe I should get a office bldg. to store all the things I have and maybe make it so that the receipient has to be reffered to be and picks up what they want by appointment only.
I am running out of space in my own home. Thank You.

Most states have a regulatory agency for a situation such as this. Persons donating items are allowed to use the donation as a tax deduction therefore they must receive a receipt. Your state regulatory agencies can give you the information to register as a non-profit entity.
