Yes, it’s tax exempt but you need to get and keep your receipt. The Salvation Army and Goodwill get so many donations that they throw away their abundance all the time. I prefer to give mine to places that get fewer donations–homeless shelters, places that help refugees, places that help the poor, etc. One of the best places I’ve found is the county psychiatric hospital. People are sometimes brought in off the street or don’t expect to be hospitalized and come in with only the clothes they’re wearing.

Yes. Goodwill or the Salvation Army take clothing donations. They also take household goods donations. They will give you a receipt for your donations for your taxes.

Yes, it can actually be a bigger tax exemption than you think. If you want to take the time to value each piece of clothing, you would most likely get to write off more than you would guesstimate. Donate to Salvation Army, Purple Heart, National Childrens Center, etc.
The Salvation Army web site has a good Fair Market Value chart for your donations.

When you donate your discards to-say-the Salvation Army of Goodwill, they will give you a receipt, which you frequently fill out yourself. Do you mean tax deductible?

Charities like the Salvation Army will give you a receipt for any donation including clothes. That amount is then deductible on your income tax assuming you file a long form.
Tax exempt is another matter all together it deals with income that is not taxed. Many disability checks are tax exempt so nothing is withheld for taxes and you don’t have to claim them as income.
I hope that answered your question and helped with tax language a bit.
