I have a friend who is considering becoming a sperm donor, but he’s uncomfortable with the idea of his sperm being indiscriminately distributed (is that the correct term?). He doesn’t want just anyone who is not capable of raising a child receiving his donation. Do any of you know how this works? Thanks.
No, they do not screen recipients, nor can he designate those to whom his sperm should go to. So, if that bothers him, he should just skip that. I have one friend who recently received her ‘donation’ and it was all done on the internet with a credit card. It was her requests that were met (rh neg), they didn’t ask much about her other than how many vials she wanted.
That said, individual clinics may make exceptions to this rule. This was a large sperm bank. All that said, if he donated to a bank that had the option of the resulting child to have contact with him at 18, then I would think that the women who would select him, would also be self-selected as someone who is deeply thoughtful about how to raise a child.
