Nothing here thats … Nothing here thats new.
All charities are run like this. Red Cross has been scrutinized countless times.
I havent read anywhere that states Red Cross has “only” 80 million or that the funds are done being allocated.
So this conclusion is being drawn far too quickly.
At the end of the day ALL charities should be scrutinized but they really shouldnt be allowed to use the word Charity anymore. Its not charitable to take money and only give a portion. Thats a business not a charity.
@Thisisme0070 and … @Thisisme0070 and it certainly would NOT cost 1,000 million $ to cover ‘fuel, transportation, water, food, rooms, and other easily neglected factors of the programs’ cost’ so yeah
If your asked to … If your asked to donate for ONE specific cause the ALL said moneys donated by people to help in that ONE specific cause should only good to serve that cause. That’s what people are excepting to happen when they donate and NOT to benifit the charity. Basically sounds like bait and switch.
The Red Cross did … The Red Cross did the same thing when they collected 2 billion for Sept. 11th and only used 1 billion and stated that they would hold the remaining amount in case of future terror attacks. People were outraged but, nothing happen. Red Cross pocketed it then and they will do it again. Major disasters are profitable for them.
You also have to … You also have to realize that unallocated doesn’t mean in our pockets. The Red Cross has several programs and several things that require money be spent. Fact of the matter is that equipment costs and fuel costs and every cost you have neglected to consider are still at play here. I mean its not like they just collect the money and hand it to Haiti and say “Have fun.” I really can’t believe the collective ignorance in this world let alone these comments.
I am so glad you … I am so glad you covered this with a video. I don’t donate to practically any organizations anymore. Thousands if not millions of the money goes to CEO’s and Program Directors. The CEO of the american red cross makes over half a million a year. Just google charity navigator and check out the website. They show all the organizations expenses and what their CEO’s make.
Ok, the basis of … Ok, the basis of this video is the following sentence from a statement from the Red Cross:
For Haiti, the Red Cross has raised more than $250 million and has plans for some $80 million of that so far, said Red Cross spokesman Jonathan Aiken.
They said they HAD PLANS for $80 million, not they were going to USE $80 million. Big difference there. I assume, as I have never had $250 million to allocate, that finding where to distribute said money will take some time to figure out.
Did you see if it … Did you see if it went to the volunteers they pay for there hotel rooms there are a lot of volunteers not in Haiti they are in Fl helping run the shelters? Plus the volunteers get money for so many number of days while they are helping for there food and etc.
Right, but 175 … Right, but 175 million? That’s a bit excessive don’t you think? I’m not going to say I’ve worked for an aid organization before, or that I understand the logistics of it, but the idea that they would have to spend 175 million dollars to earn 80 million equates to an ill organized campaign. They should be maximizing the amount the amount they can donate by taking these things into account by doing things like watching the money spent on advertising. As for employees, I’d think most are volunteers
If you new anything … If you new anything about charities you’d know that a 30% donation is actually quite good. The thing you fail to consider is all the expenses they forgo that they have to cover with the donations. I used to work for a company that on gave 20% because they have to pay for advertising, equipment, postage, paper, ink, employees, and several other things. IF Red Cross spent donated all of it they would half lost a lot of money and not been able to help millions of other at other times.
Just yet another … Just yet another potential example of a religious “nonprofit” scamming people under the auspices of helping a devastated country. I wonder how much of that money for Haiti is actually going into the coffers of some bureaucrat’s salary within the organization. Kudos for holding these people responsible.
Zennie, psychology … Zennie, psychology 101: when an individual runs his own charity his motives are much easier to get linked to his personal gain than in case of a highly structured, faceless organization.
I wouldn’t trust Bono either.
It is remarkable how loads of charity money go unaccounted for without much ado.
Is it because donating is considered to be the only catharsis available to the developed world to redeem itself?
Or is it because nobody wants to get blamed for people distrusting charities anymore?
Great reporting… … Great reporting… I’m looking forward to linking this to my blog here in DC where I’m on pop radio… but where “people who work with the right people” listen and word will get around… Thx for the coverage… great stuff and great blog!
Thanks! I too … Thanks! I too didn’t understand why some would do that to Wyclef, but then we’re reminded that the Devil’s always at work, ah? The people that did this forgot that the view would be turned back on them.
good reporting … good reporting Zennie, you bring up some interesting issues. People don’t like to use logic. While we were looking at Wyclef digging out rubble with his own hands, when I travel back through my 4 interviews with Wyclef over the last 10 years and he always mentioned helping Haiti, why then would we turn against him in a time of crisis. The way disasters work, everybody helps until the cameras turn off, when the cameras are off, Wyclef will still be fighting for Haiti. Red Cross??
Thats a bad thing, … Thats a bad thing, but no big shock to me. The RedCross has many dark things in its history – you can go back to WW2 & Nazis. In recent years, there was scandal/large profits from their blood donation “business”.
I think for the … I think for the same reasons that the Wash Post and The Smoking Gun aimed at Wyclef Jean – the reporters were tipped off by someone in the communications department of another nonprofit trying to trip-up his Yelle Haiti effort. As someone wrote below, people assume the Red Cross is ok, so they don’t check. But this problem was obvious.
