In response to the Haitian relief effort, Starbucks today committed support and funding to the growing international relief effort. Starting today, Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada will enable customers to make monetary donations at store registers, with no purchase necessary, to benefit the American and Canadian Red Cross organizations for a limited time. The Starbucks Foundation will also donate $1 million (U.S.) from The Starbucks Foundation to the American Red Cross efforts to help Haiti.

    I was going to …
    I was going to donate until I read that Wyclef started the charity with ZERO of his own money. Now im reading in the NY times that not only has he not donated any of his own $, but he’s using it as his personal piggy bank. AND NOW he’s blaming the accusation on the white man (the all time great go to excuse). In any case, I’ve become disheartened and am going to have to pass.

    @ozzyb24,

    @ozzyb24,

    Unless Haiti gets these 3 things under control ( in the very near future ) that country most certainly will not be “bouncing back” anytime this century.

    1 ) Political corruption

    2 ) Over population

    3 ) A rampant “voodoo” culture based on superstition and pseudo religious ignorance.

    If these things are not tackled urgently, we can be “positive” and “encouraging” all we like; Haitians will continue to live in Dickensian squalor – indefinitely.

  13. worthlessdollar1 Says:

    ingridgott, there …
    ingridgott, there are already over 10,000 charity organisations active in Haiti – and they have been making the situation WORSE.

    Haiti’s biggest problem, aside from corruption, is over population. The birthrate is 3.8 and the population continues to explode even as unemployment remains at 80%. Those charities are literally feeding an unsustainable population boom.

    Immediate assistance must be provided to survivors, of course. But no amount of blankets and tinned tuna will solve this mess.
