What’s your opinion about places like GoodWill and other thrift strores?

I donate a small amount of clothes to Goodwill almost every year and a friend bought it to my attention that she didn’t believe it was a good idea because the Goodwill sells the clothes instead of giving them away.

My argument was that they also give you a receipt for tax purposes if you itemize your deductions every year.

But for some reason, I always thought they gave out charity donations to the homeless every year, am I right?

Goodwill is not really a charity that focuses on the homeless specifically. They’re more geared toward helping disadvantaged people find jobs. The money from donated materials typically goes toward job training and placement. I like what they do because it’s providing people with skills and jobs, so they can maybe one day be able to pay it forward. As far as taxes, all charities will give you a receipt for deduction itemization, so if you want to donate specifically to an organization that’s geared toward the homeless, you should.

They sell the clothing and then use the money to buy food for the homeless and cover expenses of shelters.

So you think that tossing out good gently used clothing is preferable to donating them.

Their prices are extremely low. They do have overhead costs just like every other business.

They spend money on equipment to help train people who need skills to better themselves and close the gap between the haves and the have nots.

Actually they only need very good clothes since they are very much over loaded with clothing. They could use more newish sheets and blankets.

When you need recently outdated software instructional text books GoodWill and other thrift stores are the place to go. As a matter of fact, for many subjects people should check out the thrift shop bookcases before going to the major bookstores.

I don’t know where you are from but here in Canada the Goodwill & Salvation Army give back to the community. In this economy alot of people enjoy going to thrift stores..I call it guilt free shopping & when the price of food & gas is up thru the roof & you have to stretch your paycheque alot of people can find what they need there. The above 2 thrift stores do not have prices thru the roof….one has a help center attached to it to help with finding a job, doing resumes etc…the other has a camp for children & helps people thru the year & at Christmas they give hampers of food & clothes……Tim Horton’s gives back to the communities it’s in by selling coffee etc & donating the proceeds for one whole day to the camps they have for children. What’s the difference between coffee & used clothes, furniture etc? Nothing… it all gives back to the community…if things were given away they would not be able to help anyone. Keep donating your things…when we buy them it benefits those that need help the most…children & families.
