Is it better to charge money for tickets or ask for donations?

I helping organize a concert for charity for children in Africa with schooling and would like to know if it is more effective to charge money for tickets (how much?) and have donations if you want to, or to not charge for tickets and put "donations highly appreciated". Any links, or studies would be helpful.

BTW: The fundraiser is in Iowa, not africa

Well it depends on who’s playing at the concert but if it’s just small local groups, somewhere between $5-10. You can also consider doing a discount on advance tickets, like you advertise $7 in advance or $10 at the door. That way people can donate even if they don’t want to go and/or you can get cash from people who might find out at the last minute that they can’t go.

Also think about ways you can get people to donate more once they’re at the event. Sell drinks or other concessions, or have some VIP tickets that are closer or have some other perk. We used to sell these things called "cheer-o-grams" where guests could pay a certain amount to have a message read out in between acts.

Well if you wanna charge then you should make it a very low amount like maybe 1 or 2 dollars.Because Africa is a very poor country. And donations just ask for donations. Here is a tip, exceot any money you get, even if it is 10 cents!!! People arent rich in Africa!
