Singapore’s Dubious donation aunties: Are they collecting donations for legitimate charities?

Posted by admin on April 9th, 2010 and filed under charities donations | 3 Comments »

Singapore’s truth story,

A Singaporean is doubtful of these aunties she saw seeking donations in shopping areas, and wonders if they are working for a real charity.

She took these photos on February 13, after following the aunties for hours.

She said:

“I find that the way that the aunties seeking donations is weird, shady or dubious.

“Are charities allowed to seek donations all year round?

“These few aunties have been spotted along Orchard Road seeking donations since october 2008 — in front of Shaw, Tangs, Paragon.

“From what I know, permit is required and permit is usually for few days in a year.

“They are using pledge cards — are pledge cards allowed for street donations?

“I dont’t think so…the name of the charity is Muhammadiyah Welfare Home…

“I have seen people who have donated without writing anything on the pledge cards and the aunties stuff the money into their bags.

“Do they hand in all the money that they have collected to the charity at the end of the day?

“What if they pocket the donation?

“And shouldn’t the money be placed in tin cans or a secured bag?

“When I took their photos, they would stop and walk away. Why?

“Are they doing something wrong?

“I saw one of them in front of one of the shopping malls.

“I was looking at her when she was asking people to donate when the traffic light was red.

“I was waiting to cross the road and she asked me what I was looking at.

“Then she walked away — into the shopping mall…shady?

Then i was chase and scream at by the thinner old aunty – she is using all kind of bad words…. she even try to slap me and snatch my handphone, onces she even call the security guard to check me out…

(update, Muhammadiyah Welfare Home does not have a permit to seek donations when this happened…)

their staff who answer my call says that they dont know???

con woman or what can she be, who will be doing charity 7days a week? unless she gets paid…

{she only will look out for tourist, rich aunties or people with shopping bags}

“I have taken part in the Yellow Ribbon’s and other donation drives before (usually only once a year and only one drive per charity).

“I have no problem with people looking at me or taking my photos.

“If you look at me when I am holding a donation tin, I will be very happy to walk over and ask you to please donate more — I am happy even if you drop ten cents into my tin.”

answer – ncss reply that pledge card can not be use for street collections, so it is wrong.
usually tin cans or secured bags are used to prevent ppl from pocketing the money…

Thank you!!

There is a blood red circle
On the cold dark ground
And the rain is falling down
The church door’s thrown open
I can hear the organ’s song
But the congregation’s gone
My city of ruins
My city of ruins

Now the sweet bells of mercy
Drift through the evening trees
Young men on the corner
Like scattered leaves,
The boarded up windows,
The empty streets
While my brother’s down on his knees
My city of ruins
My city of ruins

Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up!
Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up!

Now’s there’s tears on the pillow
Darlin’ where we slept
And you took my heart when you left
Without your sweet kiss
My soul is lost, my friend
Tell me how do I begin again?
My city’s in ruins
My city’s in ruins

Now with these hands,
With these hands,
With these hands,
I pray Lord
With these hands,
With these hands,
I pray for the strength, Lord
With these hands,
With these hands,
I pray for the faith, Lord
We pray for your love, Lord
We pray for the lost, Lord
We pray for this world, Lord
We pray for the strength, Lord
We pray for the strength, Lord

Come on
Come on
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up

Allen Community Outreach Resale Shop Renovation

About ACO

Rebuilding Lives in Allen, Fairview and Lucas by providing emergency assistance for families and individuals.

Rebuilding lives, one family at a time.

Like building blocks, rebuilding the lives of a family takes many blocks, each carefully laid to build a foundation. The loss of employment, a family illness and unpaid bills can all cause a family to break down and create a feeling of helplessness. Help obtaining the skills to rebuild lives is available at Allen Community Outreach.

Opened in 1985, Allen Community Outreach (ACO) has helped families living in Allen, Fairview and Lucas to rebuild their lives through the many services provided. ACO is a non-profit organization, funded in part by Collin County United Way, an affiliate of United Way Metropolitan Dallas. The majority of funding for the agency comes from local, individual donations and fund raising activities.

Providing the necessary building materials ….

Tools to rebuild the lives of a family in crisis are available though ACO programs and services. Many families may need only short-term assistance, like a bridge built to help them through a crisis. Others lives have been torn a part, or stripped of everything and they require more specialized assistance and counseling to regain stability within their family.

Most of the necessary building blocks are available through financial assistance with household bills, groceries from the Allen Food Pantry, clothing and house wares from the ACO Resale Shop, new school supplies for children in need, and holiday programs providing groceries for a traditional Thanksgiving meal and gifts and toys for children, teens and seniors at Christmas, and more.

Volunteers and Donors make it happen ….

Without the many hours of volunteers and the generous donations of those throughout the community, ACO would not exist. It takes all of us working together to help our neighbors and friends rebuild. Collections of everything from toothpaste to diapers to laundry detergent are gathered with kindness by school children, church groups and community leaders and made available at ACOs office for those families in need of the basic necessities. Donations large and small from our community stay in our community.

Through our Meals on Wheels & More program, ACO volunteers deliver warm smiles along with warm meals to homebound individuals each weekday. Volunteers helping hands and donations of gently used clothing, furniture and household items help to stock the ACO Resale Shop. Families in need of items can shop for what they need through a voucher system. Donations of food, toys and many volunteer hours assure a happy holiday for the families in Allen, Fairview and Lucas.

Please browse through the ACO website to learn about the services provided and how volunteers and donors can help. For more information please contact the Allen Community Outreach offices at 801 E Main St in Allen or call 972-727-9131. To reach individual staff members and email addresses see the “Contact Us” page.

Thank you!

About Blu Shields Construction and Energy Solution Homes:
Blu Shields Construction (Blu Shields, President) is a division of Energy Solution Homes (Patrick Henderson, CEO) of Texas City, TX. It is their vision to change the philosophy of custom homebuilding. They are the only builders in this part of the country building high energy efficient homes (without solar or wind generated power) that produce very low electric bills. Their homes are built within 30 to 45 days, below the average construction cost. Their real challenge is to unite all builders as one, while bringing together all county and city emergency management teams so that communities can be rebuilt, not only in coastal regions but throughout the entire United States.
